Am I an Artist?

As an artist I constantly feel discouraged. Am I good enough? Are my paintings even that great? Will anyone buy them? Should I just give up? I have looked around my bedroom and closet and seen the endless collection of paintings and thought, "I probably shouldn't paint any new paintings until I sell some of these". This was my mentality for a short time. Until I realized, I don't initially make art for anyone else but me. I do it because it is my passion and it's fun.

I have not taken any formal art courses, I have just learned from doing. I have also studied many artists' biographies and have found they were all troubled and not many were very sure of themselves. I found a quote by Andy Warhol that lifted that veil from my eyes.

If people enjoy my art they will buy it, if not oh well. It is not going to stop me from creating it. I know someone out there is going to love what I paint and they will find it. In the meantime I am going to keep going. I won't stop. My world is colorful and bright and I am not going to let anything change it to black and white. I know I am not alone in this feeling that our society tries to make everyone the same and create a cookie-cutter country. I won't take part. I won't follow where they lead, I will instead keep going on my own path. I will take those who want to walk WITH me.

Be you, be free. Whether you are an artist whose tool is a needle and thread, a pen and paper, paint and canvas, or words. You are an artist, you are unique and you are YOU. As for me, I am free with a paint brush, palette, and paint stained clothes and fingernails. I am me.
