Bird is the Word

A while back I got an idea for a mixed media painting I wanted to start. The inspiration came from a design on a piece of scrapbook paper with adorable colorful birds. I had also been watching a lot of Donna Downey Inspiration Wednesday videos, (If you would like to view her videos, click here). She definitely inspires me to try new things as an artist. Her videos are also so interesting and entertaining. So I decided to begin on this new project, which started with just an 11x14 canvas.

I started by just ripping different pieces of scrapbook paper and washi tape and mod podging them onto the canvas. I added paint colors that complemented the colors in  the paper with a sponge. Of course I have a slight signature of adding paint splatter to almost all of my projects, so I had got a bit of orange in spray bottle and spritzed away. I knew I wanted to paint some little birds on top of all that so I picked a few cute ones from the paper and painted them with metallic acrylics. I also outlined them in black so that they would stand out better. I have an obsession with buttons, in case you hadn't noticed from my Etsy shop, so I incorporated some of my favorite bright buttons. I also added some paper flowers and a butterfly for embellishment. I finished it off with a matte sealant.

Once I finished the painting I decided I didn't want to sell it by itself. I wanted to create a whole set for this, so that if someone were to decorate a room they didn't just have one bright painting with nothing to accompany it. I headed to Micheal's and found a blank wooden bird and the small ceramic bird. I painted a layer on the wooden bird and then sponged on a light layer of metallic paint. I added scrapbook paper for a wing and finished it off with more bright buttons. I made a little design on the small ceramic bird and finished it with sealant. I love this set as a whole and feel proud that I tried something new and it worked.

I hope to continue pushing myself to try new techniques. I never want to limit myself to just one type of art, I want to learn it all! As an artist I constantly doubt myself and never feel quite good enough but, I take solace in the fact that every great person started out as nothing more than a novice. We must all learn and practice, some may pick up a new skill quicker than others but if we all keep working and don't give up we too can do great things! I hope I am not alone in this way of thinking.

Farewell until next time,

Jess
